Venice was one of the first cities in Europe where you could taste coffee. As early as 1585 the Venetian ambassador to Constantinople notices that Turkish people drink a “black boiling water” that keeps them awake. Next thing you know the Venetian merchants are importing coffee beans and cafes start to open in St Mark’s Square.
